Restaurant Review - Buon Gusto, Southampton
Restaurant name: Buon Gusto
Location: Southampton
Description: Independent Italian restaurant near the Mayflower theatre that offers pre- and post-theatre meals and a la carte.
Reason for visit: Dinner after seeing the Rocky Horror Show at the theatre nearby for my sister's birthday
I ate: Crostini formaggio, £5.25 - a piece of ciabatta bread topped with goat's cheese and caramelized red onion and a small amount of rocket salad (see photo above). For the main course, I chose confit d'anatra, £16.95 - confit of duck leg, served with a morello cherry and red wine reduction (see photo below). cheese
My companions ate: We were a fairly big group; starters chosen included calamari, and for main courses pizza, pasta and chicken breast stuffed with mozzarella.
The food was: My food was excellent; the starter had just the right amount of cheese and caramelized onions so neither was overpowering and I didn't feel the restaurant had stinted. The duck was really well done and fell off the bone and the sauce was tangy and tasty.
The atmosphere/service was: Very good, considering we were a big group and also in fancy dress which they didn't seem to mind!
Price range/value for money: Not cheap and I would have liked to pay a couple of pounds less for my main course, but there is also a set pre- or post-theatre menu that is less expensive.
Would I recommend it? Yes, especially if you are seeing a show at the Mayflower.
